Issues Raised by CAD-GIS Workshop Groups

At the CAD-GIS Integration Workshop held at GeoTec last June in Vancouver, attendees discussed the issues around CAD-GIS integration that affected them.

How do they compare with issues in your organization? Please add your comments below.

WHAT ARE THE MAJOR CAD-GIS INTEGRATION ISSUES IN YOUR ORGANIZATION?
GROUP 1:

* Effective connectivity between CAD & GIS
* Data Quality
* Stove Pipes (Silos)
* GIS/CAD not part of general IT
* Interdepartment Communication
. - Drafting & Engineering
. - IT & GIS/CAD
* Database schema design

GROUP 2:
* Translation
. - Accuracy
. - Automation
. - Cleanup
* Contractors
. - Getting Data
. - Standards
* Use of spatial tools to relate data (i.e. labels)
* What should be in GIS vs. CAD?
* Interoperability:
. - Is it realistic?
. - Inconsistent design practices
* Design techniques have changed, business hasn’t caught up
* Architects are reluctant to embrace change (standards)
* Technology not the issues – it’s the human factor
